Encyclopedia Britannica. Formatting Guidelines and Arrangement of Citations (Gibaldi, 5.4,
5.5) 1.
The Works Cited appears at the end of your
paper, beginning on a new page. 2.
Number each page in the upper right corner,
½” from the Top. The sample is for a 14 page paper, so the Works Cited begins
on page 15. Include your last name. 3.
The information for one source is called a citation. The example below contains 6 citations. 4.
Start listing citations at left margin,
1“from left edge of paper. Set a 1”
right margin and bottom margin. 5.
Do not number citations. 6.
Alphabetize citations by the author’s last
name. 7.
If an author’s name is not given,
alphabetize by title. Ignore A, An
or The. 8.
Double space the whole citation and indent
any lines after the first line. In Microsoft Word go to FORMAT menu, then to PARAGRAPH;
Alignment: Left; Special: Hanging Indentation; 9.
Double space between citations. 10. Even
after searching thoroughly, you may not be able to find all parts of a
citation in your source. For example,
many web sites do not list an author, publisher or date. Do not use the phrase “author known”, “date
unknown”, or “publisher unknown” etc. Include only what is available. 11. Do not
group citations by type of resource. S A M P L
