Welcome to High School English I

Here’s a few things you need to know about this class.

Required Supplies: due by Friday this week

1. a portfolio or heavy-duty folder with dividers for the following 5 categories: literature, writing, grammar, vocabulary, research

2. small pocket stapler

3. notebook paper

4. one manilla folder

5. pen with white out and a pencil with an eraser

6. Chandlers to write assignments in

7. spiral notebook for English only, not the divided kind

8. set of colored markers for group work

Attitude: Keeping a positive and respectful attitude is the most important thing to remember about English class and life in general.  This means understanding that the work given in this class is not punitive but purposeful. Grades and comments given on returned homework are between you and me, and we should discuss anything you question or wonder about.  Most importantly is the fact that we respect each other’s individual differences and treat each other with kindness and consideration. This is especially important in an English class where we constantly reveal ourselves through our discussions and writing.

Absences: Finding out about what we did in class and what reading or homework we have is YOUR responsibility when you are absent; therefore, you will each receive a copy of class telephone numbers so that you can discuss what went on in class. You are responsible for all homework given on that day. I will give you any handouts the next day you return to class. Be sure to review them. You can ask me about any details after class or through an email. If you are absent the day of a test, expect to make up the test the next day you return unless you have been ill for an extended length of time.  Then see me to schedule a day.

Homework:  All homework must be done on the computer unless otherwise specified. All homework must be correctly formatted according to our writing committee’s guidelines. (See handout.) In addition, please staple all assignments as needed before you get to class. Keep in mind that though quality in writing is always expected, so is quantity. When a homework assignment is specified as “one page” on the computer, this means exactly that otherwise points are deducted. Be sure to adhere to the standard margins and font size.

As a freshman in a high school English class, late work is unacceptable. Please plan ahead to avoid last minute emergencies. When your printer or computer is down, please take the time to go to the writing lab or library before school or before class to print up your work.  If this cannot be done, you must write out your homework assignment so that you have something to turn in to class. Please do not come to class with just your disk. Be sure your home computer is compatible with the computers here at school. Early this week, talk with teachers in the writing lab about any your computer’s compatibility with our writing lab. If you are having difficulty meeting a deadline, it is crucial that you communicate with me prior to the due date.

Let’s work together to make this year a success!  I am in A112  after 9th period each day until 3:30 PM. Otherwise, please feel free to email me by 7:30 PM each evening at the following address: Linpeps@yahoo.com

Policy for Late or Missed Work

1.  Homework: In order to get used the work load in high school, for the first two months we will have "Catch Up Day" on every Thursday after school for those missing one or more simple assignments. In addition, work not completed to the teacher's satisfaction will be rewritten on Thursday.

If you are absent on the due date, the homework is due the day you return. Call two students to make sure you have the correct assignment. If you are absent when the homework is assigned, check the index card box to see what the assignment was and check with me about an acceptable due date.

2. Papers/Projects: One day late results in a markdown of l0% (one full grade). Each successive day late results in 5% off. This process continues until the paper is handed in or until zero points are left.

3. Tests/Quizzes: It is your responsibility to arrange for a time to make up tests or quizzes missed due to absence. Such arrangements should be made immediately upon return to school.

4. Field Trips: This is not an absence from school. If you will be on a field trip, you must ask ahead of time what the homework will be and you must still hand in any work due that day. Work can be put in my English office mailbox or handed in with another student.

5. Tardies/cuts/reassignment: If you arrive to school late and miss this class, you are still responsible for the work given that day and the work due that day. I will always post the day's homework. Any work that's due must be turned in to me or my mailbox when you arrive.

A class cut is not an absence. Any work due that day or assigned that day will be an automatic zero.
