**You will need a spiral/journal book of your choice.
Class Instructions:
a. Students with special needs
are invited to identify themselves early in the term so we have time to make
any necessary arrangements.
b. A student who does not withdrawal officially from a course may receive
a grade of “F” depending on course progress or course attendance,
which will become a part of the student’s permanent record.
c. Each student is responsible for adhearing to the code of student conduct
as stated.
d. Plagiarism is cheating and will result in a failing grade.
e. Students must complete all major assignments in order to receive a passing
grade in this course. No exceptions!
f. Grades are on a strict scale:
100%-90% A
89%-80% B
79%-70% C
69%-60% D
Below 59.9% F
Specific End Competencies:
Students will have the opportunity to write for a wide variety of purposes. The assignments and topics chosen will be generated from the literature. Students will recognize the impact of decisive ideas and events in human heritage, will understand the elements of creative writing and literature including plot, climax, irony, and character development, and will understand and study the lives and writings of several authors including: Poe, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Dickinson, Hughes, Kerouac, Ginsberg, and others.
Writing: To communicate effectively
using standard written English. Students will be asked to write analysis/reaction/contrast-comparison
papers/and participate in class discussions.
Reading: To analyze, summarize and interpret a variety of reading materials.
Integrated Learning: To think critically and make connections in learning
across the discipline. The students will be asked to analyze/critique/interpret
the assigned material through classroom discussion/assigned journals/papers/essays/tests
that emphasize the development of ideas.
Creative Thinking: To elaborate upon the knowledge to create new thoughts/processes/
products. The students will write essays/journals or give oral commentary
that demonstrates discovery/invention/originality.
Evaluation: The student fulfills the assignments for the course. This includes
reading/writing/discussion/oral reports/examinations.
Classroom Policies:
• Attendance is required
at all class meetings. Late arrivals will reflect negatively on your grade—be
prompt! A detention will be issued after three (3) tardies. Please inform
the instructor of special absences.
• Make-up exams will be taken on non-class time (Library will hold exams/quizzes).
A student must inform the instructor if they are not able to make an exam.
Late assignments final score is deducted 10%.
• Students are solely responsible for getting notes and materials when
they are late/absent. Instructor will not “back track” on material
unless a special request is established and approved.
All Students and Parents must note that all students will sign a document that states:
I (student) am writing in a school environment and will adhere to school rules and level of appropriateness, and that anything submitted to Mr. Stock is “publishable." That is, my work may be shared with Parents, Deans, Counselors, and other appropriate authorities.
