Welcome to Freshman English! I hope that you are looking forward to an
enriching and exciting new year. I hope
that you not only learn a lot and heighten your interest in English and
literature, but also that you enjoy yourself in the class while doing so.
Homework:
Homework is due the day after it has
been assigned or on the date previously specified. There will be a variety of different kinds of
homework assignments throughout the year, and each student’s best effort is
expected on each assignment. No late
homework will be accepted. If you
are absent on the day an assignment is due, you are responsible for turning it
in the next day that you are in class.
The responsibility for this falls upon you; I will not chase after
students begging them for homework. (Hint: Handing in quality homework is a major step
toward achieving a desirable grade in this class.)
Participation:
Active participation in all class
activities is required for all students.
Participation, or lack thereof, can affect a student’s grade. Not only will participating in class discussions
and activities aid in your learning, but it will also contribute to a livelier
and more interesting classroom environment.
Absences:
If a student is absent on a particular
day, it is his/her responsibility to acquire the notes, handouts and
assignments from that day. Homework or
essays due on the day a student was absent must be submitted upon the return of
the student. Homework assigned on the
day you were absent will be due the day after your return to school. In cases of extended absences, see the
teacher about a makeup plan. Students
will not be able to make up an entire quarter’s work in the final week.
Truancy:
While I understand that students do
get sick and family emergencies arise, it is important to be in my class on a
daily basis. If a student does “cut” my
class, I am personally offended. If such
an occurrence were to happen, the swiftest and strongest consequences will
result.
Inappropriate
Behavior:
Behavior deemed inappropriate by the
teacher will not be tolerated. Any
action that disrupts the cohesiveness and/or integrity of the classroom will be
dealt with immediately. Depending upon
the level of the offense, a warning, detention, parent phone call, or dean’s
report may be issued.
Grading:
A point system is used. The grading scale is listed below:
100-90%=A 89-80%=B 79-70%=C 69-60%=D 59.9% and below=F
***Any
student should feel free to come and talk to me about English or anything else
that I could assist you with. Before
school and during my free periods are the best times to meet with me.
