District 207 teachers have developed several tools to assist students in successfully completing research projects. Students are expected to use these tools and follow District 207’s style manual requirements based in part on MLA (Modern Language Association) standards. Significant changes have been to MLA in their 7th edition. Please examine these changes below very carefully.

I. Works Cited Instructions, Formatting Guidelines and Specific Examples

II. Parenthetical Citations | III. Using Quotations

General Formatting Guidelines for the Works Cited Page

  • Begin the Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your research paper or project.
  • Label the page Works Cited and center it.  Do not italicize, bold, or underline it.
  • Double space all citations.  Do not skip an extra space between citations.
  • Do not number items.
  • Alphabetize the list by the authors’ last names.  If the author’s name is not given, alphabetize by the title.
  • Start on the left margin.  After the first line, indent the second line and any additional lines (hanging indentation). When you start a new entry, go back to the left margin for the first line.

New for MLA 2009

  • For each work cited, you must determine the “Medium of Publication.” Most entries will likely be listed as Print or Web sources, but may include items such as Film, DVD, CD, and others.
  • URLs are no longer required for Internet entries. However, if your teacher requires URLs, include them in angle brackets after the entry and end with a period.
  • If you're citing an article or a publication from a subscription database, you should type the online database name in italics. You do not need to provide subscription information in addition to the database name.
  • Use italics (instead of underlining) for titles of larger works (books, magazines) and quotation marks for titles of shorter works (poems, articles).
