General Resources

  • CNN Weather ~ Weather news, plus worldwide forecasts for hundreds of cities around the world. Divided by Africa, Europe, Australia & New Zealand, Middle East, Asia, China, South America, Canada, Mexico & Central America, and Caribbean.
  • National Weather Service ~ The U.S. government's site for local, national, and international weather, which includes some historical data. Current Conditions gives the weather world-wide. Of particular interest is a listing of all the active weather warnings in effect in the U.S.
  • The Weather Channel ~ Companion website to the cable network. Access current weather conditions and forecasts for U.S. cities and towns as well as for most places in the rest of the world. Contains air quality and pollen forecasts; information about how hurricanes are named, what those names are, and when the official season begins and ends; seasonal gardening guides; driving conditions; and much more. Includes a browsable map collection.

Climate and Global Warming

  • MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change ~ "An interdisciplinary organization that conducts research, independent policy analysis, and public communication on issues of global environmental change."
  • The Pew Center on Global Climate Change ~ Features a collection of reports on the effects of climate change on the earth. Also includes background information on global warming and updates on actions taken by governments and the business community.
  • US Global Change Research Information Office ~The US Global Change Research Information Office (GCRIO) provides access to data and information on climate change research, adaptation/mitigation strategies and technologies, and global change-related educational resources on behalf of the various US Federal Agencies that are involved in the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).
  • What's Up with the Weather? ~ This site examines "the science and politics of one of the most controversial issues of the 21st century: the truth about global warming." Topics include fossil fuel consumption, the role ice cores play in interpreting the history of the global environment, and more. From Nova and Frontline, programs produced by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

Hurricanes

  • Center for the Study of the Public Health Impact of Hurricanes ~ "a Health/ Flood Impact Consortium that integrates the research and expertise of numerous natural scientists, social scientists, engineers, computer specialists, epidemiologists, toxicologists, and the mental health and medical communities --- working together
    to identify and mitigate the public health impacts of hurricane and flood
    disasters.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response ~ Includes fact sheets on topics such as hurricane readiness, hurricane recovery, protecting pets, electrical hazards, carbon monoxide, reentering a flooded home, contaminated water, and protecting yourself from mold. From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • FEMA Storm Watch ~ Read, view, and listen to storm advisories and related information, follow storm-related news, and track disaster-response preparations, forecasting, and recovery.
  • National Hurricane Center ~ .A huge amount of current and historical storm information, including current public advisories in both English and Spanish. Includes formats such as satellite imagery, weather radar, and PDA-accessible updates. The "Learn About Hurricanes" section links to extensive information. Storm and weather advisories also available by email subscription. "Season Summaries and Reports" has information on activity in the Atlantic and East Pacific regions.
