Includes archive dating back to 1995; searchable, and browsable by subject. From the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
  • NASA Multimedia Gallery ~ Extensive collections of art, photos, video, and other interactive features.
  • NASA: National Aeronautics and Space Administration ~ The main site for NASA is the entryway to a huge amount of information in various formats, with sections for children, students, educators, the media, missions, news, and more.
  • Smithsonian Images ~ Over 2.5 million images in all subject areas. "Smithsonian Images is administered and maintained by Smithsonian Photographic Services, the main photographic office for the National Museum of American History Bering Center, National Museum of Natural History, and National Air and Space Museum."
  • Stephen Hawking's Universe ~ Based on the PBS program, this site explains cosmological concepts in simple, easy-to-understand language
  • Windows to the Universe ~ This site answers your questions about the solar system, the universe, and the scientists who have discovered these worlds and you can choose answers at a beginning, intermediate, or advanced level.

  • Animal Diversity Web ~ An "online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology." Covers mammals, birds, arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, sharks, bony fishes, and other animals. Includes audio of selected animals, resources for teachers, and links to related sites.   • Biology Online: Information in the Life Sciences ~ A searchable collection of tutorials on various subjects of biology. Includes an online dictionary and related annotated life and earth sciences sites. Search note: the site uses British spelling of English.

  • The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) ~ The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants, ferns and fern allies. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names.
  • Introduction to the Plant Kingdom ~ Topics include plant classification, ancient algae, the moving of plants to the land, mosses, ferns, and the development of seeds, and the diversity of flowering plants.   • General Chemistry Online ~ An introduction that includes hyperlinked notes, guides, and articles for first semester (college) chemistry. There is a glossary, FAQs and a trivia quiz.   • Periodic Table of Comic Books ~ A fun, searchable site where elements are linked from a periodic table to comic book pages utilizing the name of the particular element. Citations include title, date, and page, if known.

  • A Visual Interpretation of the Elements ~ A project "to produce images that explore and reflect upon the diversity of elements that comprise matter." Each of the elements is accompanied by a visual image, as well as a description and history (including origin of name).
  • WebElements Periodic Table ~ Contains the periodic table and information on each element, including historical background, uses, compounds, electronic and physical properties, and more.

  • Congressional Research Service Reports ~ Browsable and searchable collection of over 1,300 Congressional Research Service documents on the environment and related topics. The CRS, part of the Library of Congress, provides "nonpartisan research reports to members of the House and Senate." The reports are presented as a public service by the National Council for Science and the Environment.

  • National Fuel Cell Research Center ~ A browsable overview of energy sources, featuring photographs, statistics, and quizzes.   • Descent into the Ice ~ This site is a companion to a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NOVA program that "follows a team of daring 'glacionauts' as they descend into a labyrinth of unexplored and hazardous glacier caves on France's Mt. Blanc" to search for trapped floodwater. The site includes information about shrinking glaciers, glacier hazards, the life cycle of a glacier, and ice climbing gear. Also includes links to related information and a teacher's guide.
  • Destination Earth ~ This official, searchable site for NASA's Earth Science Enterprise focuses on the agency's exploration of the earth and is "dedicated to understanding the total Earth system and the effects of humans on the global environment."
  • Discover our Earth ~ Information about the earth sciences — earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, topology, and sea level change — along with images, graphs, maps, and movies. From the Institute for the Study of the Continents (INSTOC), Cornell University.

  • Ocean Explorer ~ This searchable site from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) "is an educational Internet offering for all who wish to learn about, discover, and virtually explore the ocean realm." The site includes information about featured NOAA ocean expeditions and related exploration activities; a gallery of images, audio, and video documenting exploration; photos and descriptions of the various technologies used; a history of ocean exploration; a bibliography; lesson plans; and professional development offerings for educators.
  • Ocean World ~ Information about many aspects of oceanography: fisheries, coral reefs, currents, El Niño, icebergs, weather, waves, and more.
  • Pompeii: Stories from an Eruption ~ Companion website to a 2005-2006 exhibition at the Field Museum (Chicago) about the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 that affected Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and other areas.
