This pathfinder will provide starting points for locating information about the Holocaust.  It lists suggestions for finding books, magazines, journals, newspapers and web pages using print resources, databases and the Internet.

Databases: Scroll over an image for a complete description.

Search Biography Resource Center for brief and extensive biographies, articles, and web resources about people in American and world life, both past and present. ~ Search for biographies on people such as Elie Wiesel or Adolf Hitler.

Search Britannica Online for reference information in literature, science, social science, and history.  Britannica Online also carries news stories from The New York Times. ~ Search for articles and images on topics such as the Holocaust, concentration camps, and resistance.

Chicago Tribune Historical Archive~ News stories of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Included: Chicago Tribune Morgue clippings file (nearly 3 million); major stories covering events and issues clipped and indexed by the Chicago Tribune staff at time of publication. Coverage is from the 1920's through 1984. Front pages (16,614 pages containing over 155,000 articles) - image of entire front page as it appeared when published from the early 1900 through 1984.

Use eLibrary to search for magazine and newspaper articles along with a variety of media including maps, images, audio/video, and television/radio transcripts. ~ Search for articles on the Holocaust or Anne Frank by clicking the Reference Tab first.

  • The Anne Frank House ~ "Web site of the Amsterdam museum located in the house where Anne Frank hid from the Nazis during World War II. Contains a biography, photos, a history of the pogroms instituted against the Jews, the reasons the Frank family went into hiding, and information on their final days in the concentration camps.   • Anne Frank, the Writer: an Unfinished Story ~ An exhibition from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
  • Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State ~ The companion site to the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) production of the same title provides an overview of concentration camps in general and Auschwitz in particular. Includes the evolution of the camp, interactive maps, transcripts of interviews with scholars, testimony of victims and perpetrators, and a video installation. (LII)
  • The Holocaust: A Learning Site for Students ~ A detailed outline of topics related to the Holocaust including ghettos and camps.
  • Holocaust Encyclopedia (from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) ~ An extensive resource of Holocaust topics.
  • The Holocaust History Project  “…a free archive of documents, photographs, recordings, and essays regarding the Holocaust, including direct refutation of Holocaust-denial.”
  • Holocaust/Shoah ~ A collection of original documents, letters, and photos document the Holocaust.  Scroll down and click on SURVIVORS & RESCUERS or THE THIRD REICH.
  • Holocaust Survivors ~ Stories from Holocaust survivors; includes a photo gallery.
  • Voices of the Holocaust ~ Interviews conducted in 1946 in displaced persons camps around Europe and transcribed into English by Dr. David Pablo Boder, an Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) professor. Click on GATEWAY to access the interview transcripts and audio files.
  • The Warsaw Ghetto ~ Documents relating to the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of April and May 1943, in which Jews fought back against the Nazis in World War II. Includes contemporary reports, biographies of participants, government documents, and excerpts from newspaper articles, books, and diaries. From the Jewish Virtual Library.
  • Witness to the Holocaust ~ "a compilation of liberator interviews, photographs, video, audio and textual files dealing with the Holocaust, the liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps in 1945 and the aftermath and consequences of the Holocaust."
  • Women and the Holocaust ~ This site covers topics related to women and the Holocaust, such as women's survival in concentration camps, women artists in the Warsaw Ghetto, and resistance activities of women in camps.
  • Women of Ravensbrück: Portraits of Courage ~ "This exhibit looks at the history and background of the Ravensbrück camp, a World War II concentration camp for women. It features stories from several inmates, images of the camp and of prisoner art, and essays on topics such as children, medical experiments, spiritual resistance, and concentration camp cookbooks."
