Summary: The Earth, My Butt, and Other BIG Round Things, is a book about a 15 year old girl who is in her sophomore year of high school named, Virginia Shreves. She deals with a lot of issues at her high school, Brewster High School, including French class, a fling with a boy (Froggy Welsh), and especially her weight. However, her weight is not only considered an issue at school, but also at home. Virginia’s mother, Mrs. Shreves is constantly focusing on Virginia’s appearance of weight by commenting on her diet, the way she dresses and her activities. Mrs. Shreves even goes to the extent of making an appointment with a doctor to talk about her weight. Mrs. Shreves was a heavy girl when she was younger and she doesn’t want Virginia to be that way when she’s at this age. Actually, she does not like to confront the fact that she thinks that her daughter is heavy. In fact, she denies a lot of things through the book and Virginia realizes that about the mother she always thought was perfect in every way.

In addition, after finding out a horrible incident having to do with her brother, Byron, who she has always looked up to, she starts to reconsider how much she looks up to him. Also, throughout the book, Virginia thinks she is not capable of having a reasonable relationship with a guy, because of her weight and her appearance. However, a boy named Froggy Welsh, definitely shows interest in her and she completely pushes him away, since she is having issues in her life and does not want to deal with him. On top of all the horrible situations Virginia goes through, she also has to deal with her best friend, Shannon, moving away for a year with her parents. Virginia has to go through a lot of problems in her life, but she also has experiences that will last her a life time and she will learn so much from. This book is about a girl who finds herself and learns to accept who she is in reality rather than what she should be according to society.

Recommendation: Complete this Sentence: If you are in high school, … are confused, are uncomfortable with your looks, have a heard time fitting in with a certain group and are constantly being compared to others (especially your siblings), then you’ll enjoy this book!

The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things
Author: Carolyn Mackler
Reviewer: A. Kroll
Number of Pages: 244
Difficulty level: 1 easy
Genre: Real Life
Number of Stars: I would give this book about three stars, because it is interesting, funny, and well worth your time.

Summary: Virginia Shreves is the main character and she has a little bigger than average size body, not many friends, and never would think that she could get a boyfriend. Her mom is always at work or exercising. Virginia’s dad is always going golfing or jet setting. She also has an older brother and sister. Bryon is in college and very smart. He is athletic and known by many. Virginia looks up to Bryon very much. Anais is thin, intelligent and in the Peace Corps, so she lives far away from home.

She looked up to Byron very much until she soon found out that he was in trouble for date raping a girl named Annie and everything after that went down hill for Virginia. Virginia tried going on a diet or eating health so that she could possibly look more like she has an average size body, but because she was so upset about Bryon she gave up her healthy eating habits. Not only did she give up her healthy eating habits but for the first time a boy actually wanted to get to know her, she liked him to, but she acted very meanly to him. She ignored and rejected him causing him to move on to a different girl. It got around Thanksgiving time when she got the best opportunity to be on her own, without all the problems going on in her family. She could also be with her best friend that moved away, which she missed very much. Shannon, her best friend invited her to go to Seattle with her family. It was difficult to get her parents to agree about letting her be in Seattle without them, but once she found a way to make her mom and dad let her go she came up with a lot of new ideas of how she was going to handle life from now on.

Recommendation: If you are a girl and you don’t really like to read you will enjoy this book.

Title: The First Part Last

Author: Angela Johnson

Number of pages: 132
Difficulty level: 1 (easy)
Genre: Real life / Romance
Number of stars: 4 out of 4

Summary: Bobby is just an average teenager, only with one major issue. He has to deal and cope with having a child. At first he and his girlfriend have to decide whether or not they want to keep it; let alone raise it. When you are in a situation like this there are many problems and conflicts you must overcome to get by. For example: looking after your kid while going to high school. The book is set up in a then and now style, so it can be confusing at times, but once you catch on your good to go.

Recommendation: If you like books that are easy to read and have a good plot then you’ll defiantly enjoy this book.

First Part Last
Author: Angela Johnson
Reviewer: C. Fuller
Number of Pages: 132 pages
Difficulty Level: 1 easy, quick read
Genre: Real Life
Number of Stars: 4, excellent book, a must read.

Summary: This book is amazing and I loved every page of it. The Narrator, Bobby, is 16 years old and the story has two settings: “Now” and “Then”. It begins in the now and he has just gotten his daughter, Feather, and is adjusting to parent hood. The “then” part starts with him on his 16th birthday hanging out with his friends and finding out his girl friend, Nia, is pregnant. The book explains Bobby and Nia’s love and their hardship with school, parents and jobs. It shows you the negative side of baby life the way television can’t, but while negative, very inspiring.

Throughout the book, you are taken from “now” and “then”, and eventually the ending of the “then” part is the place where the “now” began at page one. First Part Last is a truly emotional book and the writing format is amazing. I wouldn’t call my self a reader and I truly enjoyed this book. If you are or have ever been a teenager then you’ll enjoy this stunningly surprising book.

Freaky Green Eyes
Title: Freaky Green Eyes

Author: Joyce Carol Oates
Reviewer: Annie R.
Publisher: Harper Tempest
Copyright Year: 2003
Number of Pages: 368
Difficulty Level: Medium
Genre: Fiction
Number of Stars: 4
Summary:
Your dad’s an ex- pro-football player and you have a lot of money, but money doesn’t solve the problems in your family. Money is not everything. In Freaky Green Eyes by Joyce Carol Oates, Franky, a 15 year old girl, who names her bad side “Freaky”, is going through a disaster when her parents start to part. She calls her self “Freaky” because when she almost got raped, she pushed the guy off of her and he called her “Freaky Green Eyes”. This novel pulls you in with its “freakiness”. Franky goes through life as a normal teen with a great family, but then disaster strikes.

I really enjoyed this novel because it shows what happens when your family starts to part. Of course a family parting is no where near a good thing, but it helps you to understand what people feel like when their family dissolves. Franky is only an innocent teen not knowing what is going on with her parents. Her parents may tell her they will never divorce because it is not what they do, in other words, they think it is wrong. Then when her mother lives in their lake house for a long time, away from the family, you don’t know what to think. Then when your mom goes missing and your dad say she’s hiding, what do you think? Do you believe your mom or dad? Who do you love and care for more? Put your self in Franky’s shoes, or even “Freaky’s”. “Freaky’s” important in Freaky Green Eyes because it is the side that helps Franky realize who she really is and what the right thing to do is.

Freaky Green Eyes was very well written. It seems like it is written by a teen because it is written like what a teen would say. I would definitely recommend this book, but mostly to teen girls, only because it is in the voice of a teen girl, and what she is going through in life. Freaky Green Eyes leaves you stunned because of the ending. If you enjoy reading books which are kind of mysterious, this book is for you. I hope you enjoy the book!
