Illinois Learning Standards

The following document was developed in an attempt to align the Illinois State Learning Standards with the requirements of the information literacy curriculum. It provides a useful guideline to demonstrate how information literacy goals can be successfully integrated into existing core curriculum using state standards. I. Applications of Learning:

II. English

A. State Goal 1: Reading: Read with understanding and fluency.
1.C.4c - Interpret, evaluate and apply information from a variety of sources to other situations.

B. State Goal 4: Listening and Speaking: Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations.
4.B.4a - Deliver planned informative and persuasive oral presentations using visual aids and contemporary technology as individuals and members of a group; demonstrate organization, clarity, vocabulary, credible and accurate supporting evidence.

C. State Goal 5: Research: Use the language arts to acquire, assess and communicate information.
5.A.4a - Demonstrate knowledge of strategies needed to prepare a credible research report.
5.A.4b - Design and present a project using various formats from multiple sources.
5.B.4a - Choose and evaluate primary and secondary sources for a variety of purposes.
5.B.4b - Use multiple sources and multiple formats; cite according to standard style manuals.
5.C.4a - Plan, compose, edit and revise information for presentation to an audience.
5.C.4b - Produce oral presentations and written documents using supportive research and incorporating contemporary technology.

III. Math

A. State Goal 10: Collect, organize and analyze data using statistical methods.

10.A.4a - Represent and organize data by creating lists, charts, tables, frequency distributions, graphs, scatterplots and box-plots.
10.A.4b - Analyze data using mean, median, mode range, variance and standard deviation of a data set, with and without the use of technology
10.A.4c - Predict from data using interpolation, extrapolation and trend lines, with and without the use of technology.
10.B.4 - Design and execute surveys or experiments, gather data to answer relevant questions, and communicate results and conclusions to an audience using traditional methods and contemporary technology.

IV. Science

A. State Goal 11: Understand the processes of scientific inquiry and technological design to investigate questions, conduct experiments, and solve problems.

11.A.4a - Formulate hypotheses referencing prior research and knowledge.
11.A.4b - Conduct controlled experiments or simulations to test hypotheses.
11.A.4c - Collect, organize and analyze data accurately and precisely.
11.A.4d - Apply statistical methods to the data to reach and support conclusions.
11.A.4e - Formulate alternative hypotheses to explain unexpected results.
11.A.4f - Using available technology, report, display and defend to an audience conclusions drawn from investigations.

V. Socials Science

State Goal 16: Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations.
16.A.5a Analyze historical and contemporary developments using methods of historical inquiry (pose questions, collect and analyze data, make and support inferences with evidence, report findings)

State Goal 18: Understand social systems, with an emphasis on the United States.
18.B.5 Use methods of social science inquiry (pose questions, collect and analyze data, make and support conclusions with evidence, report findings) to study the development and functions of social systems and report conclusions to a larger audience.

VI. Physical Development and Health


State Goal 22: Health Promotion, Prevention, and Treatment
22.A.4d - Research and report about a career involved in health promotion, health care and injury prevention.

VII. Fine Arts

State Goal 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are produced.
26.B.4d - Demonstrate knowledge and skills that communicate clear and focused ideas bases on planning research, and problem solving.

VIII. Foreign Languages

State Goal 28: Use the target language to communicate within and beyond the classroom setting.
28 D.4b - Make a persuasive presentation with documentation from target language sources.
