Coach States is currently the Head Boys Varsity Soccer Coach. This is Coach States' sixth season as a Maine South soccer coach and his first as its head coach. Prior to his arrival at Maine South, Coach States had a successful tenure as the Head Boys Soccer Coah at Saint Patrick High School in Chicago for eight years. He was twice chosen Illinois Sectional Coach of the Year as well as East Suburban Catholic Conference Coach of the Year. In 1996, Coach States was also a finalist for Illinois State High School Association Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. He also served two years as Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at North Central College. Coach States holds a National Diploma with the National Soccer Coaches Association. He also participated in soccer at Naperville Central High School and Iowa State University, where he was an All Big-8 Goalkeeper. After graduation, he played men's club soccer for a variety of clubs in the National Soccer League of Chicago while becoming a three-time selection as Goalkeeper of the Year. Coach States has a BA in Political Science and History and an MA in International Relations. Mr. States is a Social Science teacher at Maine South.

Tim Spiegel

Coach Spiegel is currently the Boys Varsity Assistant Soccer Coach at Maine South High School. Over the past eight years as head coach, his teams have a combined 103-62-36 record and have earned four Miro Rys Sportsmanship Awards, five National Soccer Association High School Team Academic Awards, four regional titles and two sectional championships, one super-sectional championship, and a third place finish in the IHSA State Tournament in 2006. Coach Spiegel is an alumnus of Fremd High School in Palatine where he played high school soccer and was a member of the school’s first state championship team in 1984 under IHSSCA Hall of Fame Coach Gerardo Pagnani. Coach Spiegel played collegiate soccer at Northern Illinois University under US Soccer Hall of Fame Coach Willie Roy. Upon graduating from NIU with a B.S. and M.S. Ed. in Special Education, Spiegel went on to lead boys’ and girls’ teams at Palatine and at Maine South High Schools. Coach Spiegel has participated in the highly regarded Dutch Coaching Seminars run by the Royal Netherlands Soccer Association KNVB in 2001 and 2002. Coach Spiegel is a Special Education teacher at Maine South.

Steve Mihalopoulos

Coach Mihalopoulos is currently the Sophomore Coach for Maine South. This is his sixth year as a Maine South coach. He had an outstanding five years at the helm of the junior varsity coach for the past five years. He has played his high school soccer at Maine West High School and his club soccer for the Maroons and Green and White. Over the past eight years, Coach Mihalopoulos has coached Freshmen A, Freshmen B and Junior Varsity Boys’ teams, and has posted a very successful overall recond. Outside of Maine South, Coach Mihalopoulos worked as a trainer with the Park Ridge Premier SC. He has also had extensive involvement for the St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church as both player and coach. Coach Mihalopoulos is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association and attended their conference in Indianapolis in 2001. He is a full-time psychologist at Maine South.

 

Laura Markus-Mannes

Coach Markus is currently the freshmen coach for the Hawks. Coach Markus played her high school soccer at Palatine High School where she was four-year starter and All-State recipient. She played her collegiate soccer at the University of Tulsa were she earned a scholarship. After graduation, Coach Markus played for the Rockford Dactyls – a semi-professional women’s team. Markus has coached both boys and girls at Hoffman Estates High School for three years, girls at Evanston Township High School for 4 years and girls at Maine South for the past six years. Coach Markus has earned an outstanding freshman record as its head coach and went 17-1-2 while capturing the CSL title for the fourth time. Coach Markus currently holds a national “C” license. Coach Markus is a Physical Education teacher at Maine South.

Andy Trenkle

Coach Trenkle is currently the head of the Junior Varisty team. This is his third year as a coach in the soccer program as he had assisted Coach Laura Markus-Mannes for the past two years. Coach Trenkle a Social Science teacher and is currently the director for the National Award Winning Constitution Team at Maine South.
